well.. i am 13, and i went to disney "world" when i was 11.. i think that you should take your son to disney "world" when he is about 8-11.. because you do want your child to remember it.. because when your child is five, he wont remember things as much as when he is eight or nine.
References :
I agree with you - 5 is a great age to take them on their first trip to either park. There is no need to wait until they are a teenager to go to Disney World. Disneyland and Disney World each have fantastic attractions and entertainment for younger children, as well as teens and adults - so there is truly something for everyone.
Visit Disney's website at http://www.disney.com and click on parks. Visit Disneyland or Disney World - whichever you are more interested in visiting. Click on "something for everyone" and check out the specific attractions for kids in that age range.

I never thought about Disneyland or Disney World being better for different ages. Why wait to 12 or 13 for Disney World? It's not that different from Disneyland. Anyway, I think you guys should think a little less, and just go have fun! Enjoy!
References :
I would say 8,9, or 10 would be good. Disney World and Disneyland are younger oriented anyways. A kid about 12 or 13 wouldn't have that much fun except on a few rides. Yes, although, it is good to go back to Disney World for the real thrill rides like Mission SPACE, Test Track, etc. when he is about 12 or 13, but by that age Universal, the Six Flags parks, the Cedar Fair parks, and the Busch Adventure parks (Sea World & Busch Gardens) are the way to go.
References :
My parents took me at age 8ish and then I went back when I was 13

I think it depends on the kid. Some kids can handle a long day at an amusement park when they're very young, some can't.

Personally, I started going to Disneyland when I was about 2 (we've ALWAYS lived right here by it). My daughter's first trip to Disneyland was when she was 5 months old (she's already been 3 times before she was a year old), BUT in my defense, we get in for free and often would only go to just walk around and see friends who work there and shop and eat, etc. If I had to PAY and travel and all that? I probably wouldn't even bother taking a child under 2 or 3. Strollers can be a pain sometimes, and with babies and toddlers you need to bring so much stuff to keep them comfortable and happy, etc.

For instance, although we've been taking her to Disneyland since she was 5 months old, we're waiting to take her to Disney World till she's about 7 or 8. For a few reasons: 1) That's a lot of money and time to travel there and all that, and I want to make sure it's worth it, 2) We want to wait to go when she can remember it, enjoy it, and actually know the difference between being at Disneyland and Disney World. It would seem like such a waste of money for us to go when she's 3 and then have her say later on that she couldn't tell the difference. =P

Think of it this way: It really couldn't hurt to wait another year or two. It'll give you guys more time to save more money or plan the trip better, etc. And he's more likely to remember and appreciate the trip a bit more when he's 7 also. But I do know what it's like to be SO excited about sharing fun with your kids. =)

Hope I helped a little!
References :
I think about 7 or 8 kids that age get excited and happy about going to somewhere like that. Kids that age are in the stage where they wanna explore and let out their energy.
